R E C H A R G E Last night class was…. Different. As a group we found ourselves in a weird funk, not quite getting the choreo and a few of us were stuck in our heads over one thing or other. We took a second to breathe in deeply and on the exhale sing “Fuuuuuuuuuuuuck” like a beautiful choir and it really helped clear the fog a bit! I love that my class cultivates an environment where people feel they can be honest and unafraid of admitting they are struggling. Our class was a mix of laughter, tears, encouragement and hugs. A gorgeous kind of group therapy and at the end, it all came together and they smashed the routine ❤️ #danceistherapy #community #supportgroup #helpeachother #danceislove

Fun fact. I was fired from my first ever Street Dance job because I messed up the counts when teaching a routine in my first class. I’d had weeks of training in the run-up to this class (with a company who shall not be named!) and I have to admit, the nerves got to me and I totally flunked. Instead of giving the opportunity to learn from my mistakes and grow, I was fired the next day - and in my favourite café, of all places! 15 years later I can safely say they did me a massive favour because I have paved my own way and discovered what kind of a teacher I wanted to be on my own terms. Teaching isn’t just a job. Be it academic, creative, fitness or any other sort, I believe that I speak on behalf of every teacher out there when I say “I do it because I love it”. I get to be the person who ignites a passion in others, helps them realise a new potential, to reframe a crappy day, to celebrate a shared love of music and movement and I’m not ashamed to say, I’m blooming good at it too. When you’re 4ft 11”, and need to be heard! 😅 Couple of small updates for my Thursday class next year so do read on! 1. My routines will now span over two weeks. The first week to learn it and the second to repeat it. I debated about this for a whole year (yes, really!) , but the consistent feedback is that people would like more time to learn and perfect so I want to give the opportunity! Fear not, if you happen to come for the first time on the second week, you will still be able to learn the class as though it were being taught for the first time! 2. Due to rising costs I have implemented a tiny price increase of £1 per class meaning a drop-in class is £9, but you can buy a 5 x class pass for £40 (to be used within 8 weeks) 3. Grab a cuppa and get comfy for this one as I have a heartfelt shout out to my personal trainer, turned wonderful friend @built.by.beth coming up! I found Beth in Sept last year, when my physical and metal wellbeing was at an all time low. After a horrible year with two herniated discs in my back, I simply didn’t know what to do with myself. I had lost all confidence in my ability and was terrified of making my pain worse. I existed in constant agony and dosed up on painkillers and was beyond miserable. I found Beth to be super approachable, she really listened to me, asked to see my MRI report to gain a greater understanding of my injuries and put together a tailored plan to rehabilitate my core, back and glute strength. My sessions with Beth were so much more than just a workout… she coached me through my tears when I was too scared to lift a barbell, told me I could do things I was adamant I couldn’t and celebrated every single win with me (even if all I did was show up)! We worked together weekly for nearly 8 months before I joined the gym and continued practicing all she had taught me. Fast forward to this weekend just gone where we competed together in a games day at @shredquartersbrighton, ending with me lunge walking with 45kg and securing my team a podium finish alongside hers!! 🥉 14 months ago I never believed I could be as strong as I am now. In fact I am the strongest I’ve ever been! She’s given me so much more than I ever asked for and I will be forever grateful 🥲 So basically if you’re looking for a really great PT in Brighton and Hove. E N J O Y Y O U R B O D Y The older I get the more I realise what a privilege it is to be healthy - not just in body, but in mind. I’ve been working hard for a few years now to reframe my mindset and be grateful and appreciative of what my body can DO over what it looks like. I read a long time ago that when it comes to self love you have to fake it till you make it and I do think that’s true… but there’s also a part of me that’s learning to accept there will be days when I just don’t love myself and that’s ok too! I may well be on this journey the rest of my life but it’s a hell of a lot more positive than constantly beating myself up over everything I’m not. After the birth of my daughter, I lost myself for a while and I truly believed my dancing days were over. My self esteem and confidence was at an all time low and it took a long time for me to find the courage to walk back in to the studios, let alone teach. Today, being a parent plays a huge role in the kind of teacher I’ve grown into and my passion for helping people discover or reignite a passion for dance is stronger than ever before. This audio really hits the spot on so many levels and it doesn’t just apply to new parents either. If an event or situation challenges and changes how you feel about yourself in a negative light, then you really do have to find the strength to dig deep and find you again. “I ain’t worried ‘bout it”….. or am I? 🫤 Full disclosure - I was stuck in my head tonight. For the first time in a while, I found myself battling the negative thoughts like ‘this routine is not going down well’ ‘you’re talking crap’ ‘you can say goodbye to a few members after this shitshow’ etc, etc. I couldn’t read the room because my anxiety was in the way and I’m annoyed about it! You wouldn’t know it in this video though would you? See, that’s the scary thing about social media. For many, myself included, it’s life’s highlight reel. This isn’t my best work and the rational side of my brain knows I’d be a fool to think I could bash out better and better choreography each week. I know there will be people that loved tonight 😃 My intention was to post this and attract new members to my classes and maybe that will be the case (oh hey 👋🏼) but as I started writing this caption, I felt compelled to be honest. Conquered a couple of fears today 1. Went to the gym in a new city. 2. Did a move I've not tried before and feel really good about it! With my back recovery, these explosive movements have been off-limits but I’m finally strong enough to handle it! I think I could have lifted heavier dumbbells but I am struggling with an arm injury just now so when that's better I will give it another go with the 8kg. I get asked a lot “You’re so busy, how do you do it?” and the truth is, I choose to work as much and as I do. I like to think I can chill but the reality is, I’m easily bored! I need something to get out of bed for, to inspire my children and to give me personal fulfilment and I find the balance between self employed and employed suits me just right. I’m a better Mum when I’m feeling fulfilled professionally and I hope they are proud of me ❤️

I wish I could tell my younger self that my size should never have stopped me going after my dreams. I wanted to be a backing dancer, to dance in music videos, to create choreography for my favourite artists. It took only one college tutor to say “No. You’re too short and curvy. You’ll never make it professionally.” to make me bury that dream and go back to the drawing board. I have a daughter now. She’s small too but unlike me then, she’s a hell of a lot more feisty and I know for a fact she won’t let anyone crush her- least not with me as her Mama and her super driven Dad! All that said, I’m proud of where I’m at and what I’ve achieved. Whilst I never got to perform professionally, my passion has inspired thousands of dancers over many years to go on and achieve dreams of their own. I’m a f*cling brilliant teacher, I’ve run my own business for almost 15 years and I’m still learning new things every day. Honest post here…… I don’t talk about it often but sometimes when teaching I suffer really bad with anxiety. I worry that I’m doing a bad job, talking too much, that the choreo isn’t good enough or that my delivery is terrible. I worry about my body image too. I’m short and curvy with big booty and for the most part I’m ok with it, till I’ve got a room full of people staring specifically at my body to learn my moves! I suffer terribly with intrusive thoughts like these, that plague my brain whilst I’m trying to speak. Sometimes it shows, sometimes it doesn’t. The point is, I have learned that just because I thought it, it doesn’t mean it’s true and I am able to push past those thoughts and get the job done! I know I’m not alone in this but I’m also very aware that the persona I put out on here is generally happy smiley good vibes and it’s important to recognise mental health, good and bad.
